Snapware Canister Set - A product review

Selecting Kitchen Canisters - Pretty or Practical?

There are several things to consider when purchasing a new canister set. The first question to answer is are you looking for a practical canister set that will be kept in the cupboard or are you looking for a stylish option which will be on display for all to see?

When I first moved into my new house, I was so excited about decorating. I had visions of my perfect kitchen, picking new accent colors, fun accessories, etc. It was a clean slate. At first I wanted pretty red canisters or maybe fiesta colors - the possibilities were exciting.

However I moved into a house about half the size of my previous one. So space was at a premium. I quickly learned that the less clutter kept on the kitchen counters the better. I started to think practically - what was really important for my storage needs?

In this article we will look at the important features of the Snapware kitchen canister set as well as some other great choices for clear plastic canisters.

What do you need to store?

Daily or occasional items

The next question to answer when selecting a new kitchen counter set is what will you be storing? When you have limited counter space, only everyday items like coffee or sugar packets really belong on the counter. I was planning on storing baking goods, like flour & sugar so decided it would be more efficient to keep my kitchen canisters in the cupboard.

Once I decided the containers would be in the upper cabinets, I needed to think about how easy they would be to get down. Having a secure lid and a handle or grip area were 2 considerations. And I wanted them to be relatively light-weight. They should be easy to grab with one hand when reaching up on the shelf.

Finally I wanted a clear plastic solution. If I had to bring down each one to check inside, that just wasn't going to work.

Snapware Square-Grip Canisters - Here is what I liked about these canisters

- The lightweight & easy grip handles make it easy to pick up with one hand.

- Super easy to open/close & definitely air-tight, if I knocked them over, the contents won't spill all over the counter.

- Square stackable design makes them ideal for small spaces. The round ones just don't fit as easily in the cabinet.

- They are made of clear plastic, so I know at a glance when I'm out of rice.

- The large size (120 oz.) easily fits a 5 pound bag of flour or sugar.

OXO Good Grips Canister Set

Another great plastic canister set is the OXO Good Grips. These were my next choice. I think these are a little prettier & the Pop up top is fun. The smaller ones can also be stacked on top of each other. Vertical storage is always a good idea when you are short on space.

They are another great option and Good Grips makes a great quality product. It just depends what you like better - The OXO pop top or Snapware handle.

Both are great though for stackable see-through storage.

OXO Good Grips has a variety of sizes - Take your pick!

Washing Tips

DON'T PUT plastic containers in the dishwasher! They will shrivel up & resemble shrinky dinks (remember those?) Not a deal breaker for me since let's be real, how often do you really wash your kitchen canisters?

With that being said, it is a good idea to wash your brand new plastic containers or when changing the contents. You don't want your rice tasting like coffee, do you? Simply rinse them with hot soapy water and long handled bristle brush, then towel or air dry.
